Mamma Owl and Baby

Mamma's Head

Mamma's Chest and Shoulders

Baby Owl and Mamma's  Lower Wings and Feet

Now I will proceed to explain how I did every section.

The first thing you need to do is select a template that you are going to use for your project.

Protect your template with a plastic sheet protector before you start working.
In fact, I worked with 2 templates. While I was working on one, I used the other to lay the finished pieces to see how they were fitting together.

The second thing you need to do is select all the colors that you are going to use for your project. Make sure that you have enough paper of each color! You do not want to be in the middle of a section and discover that you run out of that particular color.

The third and final thing is to start working on your project. I began by making the eyes because they are a focal point for my owl.

*For this project you will be using fringed flowers, teardrops, and marquises. In addition you will include wheaters, alternate side looping, and husking.*

OK. Here we go. Let’s start quilling!

EYES

Step 1
To make the center of the eyes you will need to glue end to end:
55 cm (22 inches) 3mm wide black, 60 cm (24 inches) 3 mm wide light yellow. Start rolling from the black strip of paper and make a tight circle about 1.5 cm in diameter.

Step 2
Fringe and glue end to end:
60 cm (24 inches) 5mm wide chocolate, 75 cm (30 inches) 5mm wide light brown and 75 cm (30 inches) 10mm wide light brown.
Roll this long strip of fringed paper around the tight circle you made in the previous step. The result will be a fringed flower.
Make 4 of these fringed flowers, 2 will be for the mother and 2 for the baby.

Step 3
Cut an ivory color strip of paper into 5cm (2 inches) long and 3mm wide little sections.
Make a marquise with each of these sections. Make as many marquises as needed to cover the “white” part of the eye for the Mamma and for the Baby.
Glue the marquises in place around the fringed flowers you did before.  Follow your template’s outlines.

Step 4
Place the eyes on your template.

Mamma's eyes

EYEGLASSES

Cut a light blue strip of paper into 5cm (2 inches) long and 3mm wide little sections.
Make a marquise with each of these sections.

Make as many marquises as needed to cover the eyeglass frame section in your template.
Glue the marquises in place around the ivory colored marquises you did before.  Follow your template’s outlines.

For the dark part of your eyeglasses frame, outline the eyeglasses with a dark blue 3mm wide strip of paper.

EYEBROWS

I used 3mm tan colored strips of paper.
Using a comb, make wheaters going 12 teeth up.
Make an alternate side looping around each wheater, thus ending with a husking .

Make as many huskings as needed to cover the eyebrow width of your choice.
Make 2 eyebrows for the mother and 2 for the baby.

Working on Baby's eyebrows

Carefully glue the eyebrows in place, following your template’s outlines.

MAMMA’S MUSTACHE

I used 3mm tan colored strips of paper.
Using a comb, make wheaters going 12 teeth up.
Make as many wheaters as needed to cover the mustache width of your choice.
Carefully glue the wheaters in place, following your template’s outlines.

BEAK

Take a 3mm wide yellow strip of paper and make the beak by using alternate side looping. Follow the shape in your template.
Using the same procedure, make a beak for the mother and one for the baby.

Set them aside. You are going to glue them later.

SNOUT

Make a triangle.
For the mother you will need a 20cm (8 inch) 3mm wide strip of black paper.
For the baby you will need a 12.5cm (5 inch) 3mm wide strip of black paper.
Glue the triangle in place between the eyes.  Follow your template’s outline.

“FLUFFY” FOREHEAD AND “FLUFFY” CHEST

Step 1
Fringed flowers:
Take 2 strips of paper 3mm wide each, one ivory and one cocoa color.
Cut both strips into 10cm (4 inch) segments.
Fringe the segments. I fringed an ivory and a cocoa together. Make sure that the light color is on the outside.

Roll both strips together to make an ivory/cocoa colored mini fringed flower.

You will need to make as many fringed flowers as needed to cover the areas outlined in your template.

Step 2
Carefully glue the fringed flowers close together and cover the designated areas for the chest and for the forehead of both the mother and the baby.

Mamma's fluffy forehead

Step 3
Carefully glue the chest and forehead pieces on to the mother and the baby. Follow the template’s outlines.

“FEATHERED” CHEST

Take 2 strips of paper 3mm wide each, one ivory and one chocolate color.
Cut both strips into 7.5cm (3 inch) segments.
Roll both strips together to make an ivory/chocolate a closed circle and then a teardrop.
To make all my circles uniform I used circle number 5 of my circle ruler.
You will need to make as many teardrops as needed to cover the area outlined in your template.

*Glue the teardrops in layers, starting from the bottom and working your way up. * See the picture below.

Set the feathered chest aside for you will glue it later.

SHOULDERS

Take 2 strips of paper 30cm (24 inches) 3mm wide each, one ivory and one chocolate color. Make sure that the ivory color is on the outside.
Roll both strips together to make an ivory/chocolate a closed circle and then a teardrop.  To make all my circles uniform I used circle number 1 of my circle ruler.
Wrap each teardrop twice with the chocolate color strip.
You will need to make as many teardrops as needed to cover the area outlined in your template.
*Glue the teardrops in layers, starting from the bottom and working your way up. * See the picture below.

Left shoulder - layer 1
Left shoulder - layer 2

(I made each shoulder a little larger than the pattern so that I could bend them over my mini mold dome letter L. However you can use any curve item like a plastic egg or a ball.)

Make the other shoulder the same way.

Set your shoulders aside for you will glue them later.

LOWER WINGS

You will need enough brown 3mm wide colored strips of paper to make the wheaters.
Using a comb, make wheaters going 9 teeth up.
Make as many wheaters as needed to cover the area outlined in your template.
Carefully glue the wheaters in place.
*Glue the wheaters in layers, starting from the bottom and working your way up. * See the picture below.
 .

lower wings - layer 1

lower wing - layer 2

The wheaters in the top layer will be a little longer than what you see in the template. It is all right because that will help you shape the shoulders when you assemble all together.

FEET

You will need to cut a yellow/orange strip of 3mm wide paper into 15cm (6inch) long segments.
With each segment, make a closed circle and then a marquise. To make all my circles uniform I used circle number 4 of my circle ruler.
Glue 6 marquises in place.
Once you made a claw, wrap it twice in black paper.

Set each foot aside. You will glue them later on to the tree trunk.

(I made each claw a little larger than the pattern so that I could bend them around the trunk.)

TREE TRUNK

You will need enough brown 3mm wide colored strips of paper.
I did my trunk by making wheaters.

However, you can make marquises, teardrops, squares or rectangles.
Cover the designated area in your template.

ASSEMBLY

Set the Mamma’s head in place on your template.  (The head is the eyes, eyeglasses, eyebrows, mustache, the fluffy chest, and snout that you have already glued together).

Glue the Mamma’s beak in place, making sure that the tip rests on top of the fluffy chest.

Set the Baby in place on your template. (You have already glued the pieces together).

Glue the Baby’s beak in place, making sure that the tip rests on top of the fluffy chest.

Set the tree trunk in place on your template.

Glue the claws in place. Make sure that they bend over the tree trunk, thus giving them some volume.

Glue the feathered chest in place (the teardrop one). Try to bend the wings a little so as to give the idea of volume. You might need to add a few teardrops to make sure that everything fits together.

Glue the lower wings in place (the wheater ones). Make sure that you wrap Baby with them. See my final project at the beginning of this tutorial.

Glue the shoulders in place. Some of the shoulder will be covering the top part of your lower wings section. The idea so as to give the shoulders the illusion of volume.

Congratulations!!!!!!  You are now ready to glue the Mamma Owl and Baby onto the background of your choice.

I used a pre-printed background.
